Today we planned to see the main tourist sights in Amman, the Citadel, the Amphitheatre and the Old Souq. Then Jaafar would pick us up at around 4pm for the 240km drive to Petra where we were booked for 3 nights.
A short taxi ride took us from the hotel to the Citadel where we discovered that the site was closed for the Eid holiday. The picture above was taken through the locked gates. It was as close as we got.
We were told that the Roman Amphitheatre was also closed. Our taxi driver had waited for us and drove us to a view point from a little backstreet before dropping us at the Old Souq.
The Old Souq turned out to be a motley collection of clothing shops which spilled out into the street. Time to give up. Another taxi ride back to the hotel, a phone call to Jaafar, and we were on our way to Wadi Musa, the town next to Petra.

The earlier start meant that we had a chance to explore the town in daylight and find the entrance to Petra.

The view from the Shara Mountain Hotel. A slight change from the 5* Intercontinental but the price was right, the place was clean and the owner, Mahmoud, was such a character that you would forgive him anything.

Dinner at a local restaurant was an experience but the food was so good that we ended up eating here every evening.
