Thirty years ago, in 1983, we spent a month camping on the island of Yell doing underwater surveys for the Leicester Polytechnic’s Shetland Expedition. Now we are heading back to spend a week in a camper van with Mam and Dad. – the trip starts with a scenic train ride from Durham to Aberdeen.

Durham railway station

Our trip down memory lane began by meeting Catherine and Peter Gibb at the railway station in Aberdeen. They still live in Mid Yell but were spending two weeks in Aberdeen at the same time as we were visiting Shetland. We had exchanged photographs so that we could be sure to recognize each other but I think we would have managed anyway – non of us have changed a bit!
