An early morning walk along Braewick beach and along the cliffs overlooking the Drongs – spectacular sea stacks that were hidden in yesterdays mist.

North-West Mainland – Eshaness

As the mist lifted we drove to the lighthouse to see what the guide books described as “some of Shetland’s most dramatic cliff scenery”.

We were not disappointed – magnificent sea cliffs on a stunning summers day.

A last look from the Eshaness camp site before Sunday lunch at the St Magnus Hotel, Hillswick – Nigel’s birthday treat. Then we leave the mainland and head to the island where we had spent most of our time all those years ago – Yell.

This brief stop en route was to view the spot where the Vikings dragged their longboats across Mavis Grind, a borrow strip of land separating the North Sea from the Atlantic. Clearly otters still use the shortcut today.

Yell

After a 15 minute crossing from Toft to Ulsta we were once more on Yell and made our way to Burra Voe Pier where we planned to spend the night. Then we made contact with Dave Robertson and everything changed.

Mam drove the camper van, through mist, intending to drop us at Dave’s and return to the camp site. Instead Dave and Beattie insisted that we parked outside their front door where we stayed for the night and returned again the next night.
