Five, 9 month old camels recently appeared on a patch of sand just two minutes walk from our apartment. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me and I went to take some photos and to see what I could find out.

Around the same time as the camels arrived numerous UAE flags appeared in the neighbourhood and one large house was completely covered in lights. I thought that all of this was something to do with National Day which is coming soon. As does happen occasionally, I was completely wrong. The man in the black trousers, who you can just make out in the picture below, explained everything when I asked permission to take some photographs.

The gentleman on the left, in the white dishdash, was completely blind but he is the father of the groom. The camels were all for the wedding feasts which were due to start the next day. So the camels were to be slaughtered in the morning.
He told me to come back that evening to take photographs of the lights which would be switched on for the first time as all the female guests arrived for a henna painting party. Obviously the origin of ‘hen party’.
